Do you slow-cook?

My slow cooker probably gets the biggest workout out of every appliance in my house during winter.

  1. It's so easy to use
  2. It's cheap to run
  3. It makes a big batch which I can freeze and defrost on weeknights
  4. It requires such little cooking effort from me
  5. It's generally quite healthy (no oil and lots of veg)
  6. You generally use cheap cuts of meat and root veggies which are both cheap
  7. Minimal cleanup
I got an el cheapo slow cooker from the Good Guys for I think $25 but it has great reviews.  I usually chuck everything in at about midnight and leave it on low all night.  The next morning I wake up to the most amazing aromas floating through my apartment.

In the last few weeks this is what I've cooked in my slow cooker:
  • Potato and leek soup
  • Pea and ham soup
  • Chicken and veggie soup
  • Massaman curry
  • Beef stew
If you don't own a slow cooker, GET ONE.  It will make your life so much easier in winter.

If you slow cook, what are your fave recipes?

  1. I love slow cooking! The best in Winter.

I usually make soups, goulash, curry etc. I often browse the net for new recipes too.

    1. Oooh goulash!! I'm putting that on the menu for Sunday :)

  2. Last year, J got a fast slow cooker for his birthday from his parents, and I loveeee the damn thing! It does pressure cooking and slow cooking, it's amazing. Would love to see your massaman curry recipe!

Michaela // Where is my mind?

    1. You know what, all I did was google massaman curry slow cooker and picked a recipe. It wasn't great, would love to try another recipe.

  3. KAYE. I use my slow cooker all the time! I dont even follow recipes for the majority of time LOL. However, I agree witht he above poster. What is your massmann curry? I think thats going to be next on my list (but tonight im making stuffed capsicums) :D

    I'm hungry now.

    1. Did you make stuffed capsicums in a slow cooker???!

  4. yes i slow cook!!! my $3 slow cooker i got from a garage sale is the best thing ever! lol mostly i do lamb or beef stews in them before work and come home to food.
    A Beautiful Zen

    1. Oooh can you send me your lamb stew recipe please? I love a good lamb stew.

  5. I don't have a slow cooker but I'm always reading about how good they are!

  6. I don't, but I think I want one. I guess I'm afraid it will be one of those things that you buy, that then sit in the cupboard taking up room. And we have no spare kitchen storage. Hmmm. Maybe a $25 outlay wouldn't be too bad.

    1. Oh trust me, when your options are:
      * Chuck everything into one appliance and walk away
      * Watch over and stir the pot on the stovetop for an hour

The first option will always win

  7. I don't cook :P but if I did I'd get one. First thing I'd make is Dulce de leche!

    1. Wait, you don't cook? How do you eat?

Also, can you make dulce de leche in a slow cooker??

Thanks for taking the time to leave me a comment :)
