Glasses vs contacts vs Lasik

I'm short-sighted and have been wearing glasses since highschool.  In preparation for the wedding I decided I would try contacts (who wants to wear glasses, walking down the aisle in a beautiful wedding gown?).  I had attempted to wear contacts many many years ago when my sisters started wearing them but I just could not stick my finger in my eye - can't do it.

This time I thought I'd be a bit more mature about it, watched some youtube videos and had my Mum on hand to give me advice.  10 minutes later I was just able to touch my eyeball with my finger but the damn contact wouldn't leave the finger and attach itself to my eye.  Every time I attempted to place the contact in and upon pulling my finger away discovered the contact was still on my finger.

I tried again a few weeks later.  It wasn't any better, still couldn't get it on.  Then I spoke to my Uncle who suggested I go to the Optometrist and get him to put it in so I can feel what it feels like on the eyeball.  He said it feels like sand initially (?!) but you get used to it.  I can barely handle when I feel like I have an eyelash on my eyeball, I really don't think I can handle contacts.

So I started considering laser eye surgery.  It's a quick surgery and hopefully little to no ongoing maintenance, however there is a risk.

Has anyone had laser eye surgery and what was your experience?

  1. I had lasik a year ago - I was very short sighted (my contact lenses were 5.75), and I can now see without glasses. I'm not gonna lie - I was terrified and had a mini panic attack on the table! But it was literally just 5 minutes (just ask for an extra sleeping pill - I'm pretty used to them and they only give you one, which didn't do much for me). After that, things were a little hazy at night for about a fortnight (but still fine to drive etc). Just a lot of putting drops in your eyes. One eye is perfect, the other is slightly less - for the first few weeks I was worried because it felt really noticeable and I felt off balance. But after that my eyes just sorted themselves out and now it's like they are both equal, feels completely normal.
I would 100% recommend it. It's definitely a change after wearing glasses for 30 years, but it is amazing not to have to worry about them

    1. That's exactly how I feel. I mean it's not a huge burden to have glasses but I lost my glasses for a few days the other week and had to dig up a really old pair which had an old script and gave me a headache. And I have prescription sunnies so I can still see when I'm out in the sun and lost those a few weeks ago too and had to wear normal sunnies and be blind.

Glad to hear it went so well for you. Will have to do a bit more research into it now :)

  2. i am a contact/glasses user. i don't really notice my contacts at all after they are in my eyes. there are lots of different shapes and types out there, so i would definitely go talk to your optometrist about which ones would be best for you. it might be the case that you have to try out different brands before you find the one. the only thing i find with contacts is that they make my eyes really dry. if i wear them for over 12 hours i start to feel them by the end of it. the reason i haven't considered lasik is that i actually like wearing glasses. maybe make sure your hands are really moist when you stick the contact in your eye? or i've heard of a little sucker things that you can use to put the contact in and take it out. good luck!

    1. Ugh see considering it's so stressful for me to get contacts in ONCE, I really don't think I could handle doing it every day. For me it'd be either glasses or laser eye surgery :(

  3. I went blind for my wedding. I could see some people and was like who is that girl in that boobie dress... doesn't look like my friend. HAHHHA.
Like you I cannot wear contacts to save my life. Anyway, my friends have done lasik and my MUM HAS DONE IT LIKE MORE THAN TEN YEARS AGO. I'm such a wimp. I also cannot afford it.

    1. Oh no!!! See that's not what I want :( I've been to so many weddings as a guest without glasses and I feel like I'm not really there with everyone else.

Did your Mum/friends have any issues after the surgery?

  4. I'm a chicken not afraid to admit that so have yet to do it myself, but a friend of a friend did it and said it was fine. He has a conversation through it and IMO was a man about it. I did read a bloggers' experience though which was the opposite and scary as hell "smell of burning flesh"! But everyone else said it's fine. :)

    Good Luck!

  5. I'm always wearing glasses too. I am able to get contacts in but I've only worn them
once (NYE) it's too hard to wear for everyday for me but then I haven't tried again.
Has your eyes plateau in vision? Otherwise you can't do laser.
